Welcome to the Wendel Works

Cheryl Strickland & Gillian Wendel

Finishing the week of learning with Cheryl Strickland at the Custom Home Furnishings School in 2000.

Welcome to the Wendel Works Blog where we’ll discuss all things window and fabric related, and maybe a few random creative side roads along the way. 2020 brought many changes and challenges for everyone, but I’m hopeful that we are now moving ahead and getting into the new normal.

This year I celebrated 22 years in business! Starting out in 1999 I didn’t realize the adventures yet to come, but today I have made many friends in the industry and met lots of lovely clients that have enriched my journey. Here’s a fun pic of me with Cheryl Strickland at her school taking the Drapery 101 class in the early days! I’m forever grateful to this icon for educating and sharing her knowledge with so many eager entrepreneurs. It was a four day intensive class, aimed at teaching us the professional way to sew window treatments and grow our businesses.

I started my business cutting drapery on my dining room floor, eventually built a table in the basement, and after several moves and tables later, The Wendel Works moved into this space.  With three industrial machines, a 12’ table with an extension, a boiler iron on a track and lots of light  it’s a lovely place to create!

Since then I have attended many conferences and trade shows trying to keep up with the ever changing window fashion industry and advance my skills. I even taught classes at the International Window Coverings Expo for several years as well as several other venues, remembering Cheryl’s generosity of knowledge. I’ve loved the journey so far and the many creative treatments I’ve made along the way. So here’s to 2021 and a new website! I’m excited to meet new friends and clients and explore the process of helping make your homes beautiful and welcoming!
